Holiday in Tokyo

Tango & Japan adventures, May 2024

For quite some time, we’ve organised yearly Tango holidays in the most extraordinary of places: a place where we’ve lived for 7 years and that is close to our heart – Japan, the land of the rising sun. So come along and join “JaPango”. Not only will you dance in one of the most exciting tango places in the world, you will also experience Japan’s beauty and amazing variety, its cities, culture, and nature. Your journey will take you from Tokyo, the current capital of old and new, to the ancient capital of the South, Kyoto.

ITINERARY

Tokyo, the city from past and future

Atmospheric, fascinating, showcasing its past and reaching towards the future; elegant, beautiful, all encompassing; spirited, strong and insane  Tokyo is all of this and so much more. One thing is for sure – you will never forget your visit to the Japanese capital.

From Shibuya to Harajuku

When not tango-ing, we will discover Tokyo’s main boroughs: we will start to discover this fabulous city at Shibuya and its famous crossing and shopping district. We will then take a look at Tokyo at its trendiest form: in Harajuku and Takeshita dori, not forgetting one of Japan’s most popular shrines: Mejijingu-Mae, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken.

Omotesando and Ginza

Omotesando and Ginza will next be on the map – along with superb shopping opportunity for arts and crafts, chinaware and clothes.

The visit of Shinjuku will showcase one of the most futuristic parts of town. Lovers of architecture will feel overwhelmed with the sight of some of the world’s most daring skyscrapers and dizzyingly high buildings – as well as our visit to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government offices, the capital’s seat of power designed by Tenge Kenzo and offering an observatory at a mind blowing height of 202m above Tokyo. Yokohama will complete the discovery of what Japan has in store when it comes to modernity.

Asakusa and Odaiba

We will also pay a visit to the neighbourhood of Asakusa. And A visit wouldn’t be complete without Tokyo Bay and its futuristic scene, architecture and the incredible mix of old and new, so we will catch a boat that goes down the river to the area of Odaiba, where we will experience our first Onsen (hot spring) in the famous ‘Oedo Onsen’ complex. And to get a bit of respite, the Japanese garden of Rikugoen will be on the agenda.
NOTE: other Tokyo visits will probably be added if time permits.

The old capital Kyoto

Perhaps our favourite part: the visit of UNESCO listed KYOTO, a spectacularly beautiful city where Geishas (Maikos) roam the city, small alleys hide the most extraordinary eaterries, the 2000 temples and shrines offer an astounding chance to discover 1500 years of history (Zen, Buddhist, Shinto), along with Castles, and so much more. You will love this part – you can even dress up as a Geisha or Samurai!

Hiroshima & Miyajima island

We will catch the Shinkansen to reach Kyoto so fast that you will need to put some gel in your hair to make it stay in place (OK, we made up that one, but it will be amazingly fast!).

Our travels will then take us to the ancient capital of Kyoto – a UNESCO site and one of the world’s most visited places, for its temples of gold, beautiful structures and Zen gardens.

On the way we will experience one of our favourite parts of the Japanese way of life: the Onsen (hot spring), so sophisticated it feels it has been elevated to a proper art. Get ready, you might like it so much you will find it hard to get out of the bath!

We will then take a look at Japan’s history at Hiroshima and its peace memorial. On the way we will visit the stunning island of Miyajima and its submerged temple.

Iconic Mount Fuji

Our trip would not be complete without the visit of Hakone, Kawaguchiko and its famous views of the mighty Mount Fuji – our last destination!
