Dear Tango Friends

We need your help.

Two years ago, in 2013, I met Therese Saporiti, a filmographer from Buenos Aires and the niece of Nelly Omar, known reverently as the ‘Cantora Nacional'(National Singer) of Argentina.

Nelly, at the grand age of 102 years, and Terese, had begun work on a documentary. The documentary aims to tell Nelly’s story, from her humble roots in the countryside of Argentina to how tango found her. Love found and lost in cruel social circumstance and a life long friendship with Eva Peron set her path. Her passion for the music of tango and her fierce, natural talent for singing are woven into the fabric of her life, a remarkably colourful life, that spans a full century. And then some.

Sadly, at 102 years old, Nelly passed away before the film could be completed…

However, with the same determination as her Aunt, Terese, a single mother and Buenos Aires resident, has kept on, scrimping and saving, working nights and anywhere in between, to complete the film.

Therese’s single goal, on behalf of her Aunt, is to release the film to the world to enjoy, and, humbly, contribute towards the history and culture of Argentina. However, because the film is filled with Nelly’s music, the fees to purchase the music rights are well and truly beyond her humble means.

In the meantime, Terese is unable to share the film, not even on You Tube, or contribute it to Universities, Cultural Societies, Film Festivals, TV, Radio or any media house. Not even the BBC can help without these music rights.

The documentary ‘National Singer Nelly Omar’ presents valuable but as yet unreleased, unique footage, music recordings and information about Nelly. It deserves a place in the historical almanac of Argentine Tango. It is meaningful. It is worthwhile. Certainly, this project will fail without the funds to cover the music rights fee, and that… well, that would be a terrible shame indeed…

Can you help? Many hands make light work! If we all did just a little… who knows what we could achieve together?
Any contribution you can make towards this project, small or large, will help Therese complete the documentary and release it. Contributions start from just £1.50 (about the price of a loaf of bread!) all the way to £700. Whatever you can donate will be HUGELY appreciated and in return Terese will thank you personally.
