Tanguera! Sadlers Wells Stage Show Musical in Review 2017

Story | Review | Rita Horne | 20 Jul 2017 | 0 comments

Bursting with high energy dance sequences, Tanguera overturns the audience with dramatic exaggerations of love, jealousy, murder and intrigue with stunning set transformations, a few cheeky costumes and some great vocals.

Accompanied by a 6 piece orchestra, Tanguera tells the story, the usual toungue-in-cheek tango musical narrative, of the young pretty girl who, arriving in Buenos Aires, instantly falls for said young handsome man from the docks, is then swept away into a world of prostitution by a chauvinistic glamorous pimp. Said young handsome man battles with the glamorous pimp to win back his love and is murdered ruthlessly at the back door of a local milonga.

If you come looking for authentic Argentine Tango you won’t find much… (you won’t find any?) though the dancing was extremely well rehearsed (even the curtain call was rehearsed), executed beautifully by truly professional artists (including 75-year-old Maria Nieves) and completely governed by clever choreaography (Mora Godoy). In saying that, there was one discreet couple with a small fleeting solo who I thought, despite the context, danced Tango exceptionally well when the choregoraphy allowed them the chance. If you go, see if you can spot them! 😉

Should you go? Yes! Grab a ticket with some friends for a fun night out and expect to be thoroughly entertained and then some.
