Meet some of the DJ’s of… Tango Heaven
We summoned the guardians committed to inspire us to dance. Yes, we met with them and asked a few questions!
ASCENSION ANGEL
Wiktoria Dmuchowska
HOW DID TANGO FIND THIS ANGEL? – I won my first tango lesson in a lottery š
DOES SHE HAVE STYLE? – Feminine and everything related to the word.
WHAT MAKES HER UNIQUE? – Simplicity!
WHAT ROCKS HER BOAT ABOUT DJ’ING? – I always love to watch people. While DJāing you watch even more attentively.
WHEN WE HAVE DANCED OUR FILL, CAN’T DANCE ANOTHER STEP, WHAT WILL SHE PLAY? – Energetic tangos by Edgardo Donato!
HEAVEN’S DARK ANGEL
Juliana Thutlwa
HOW DID TANGO FIND THIS ANGEL? – …through fashion. I was studying fashion design and teaching salsa that time and had to do research for a new collection (seminar “paper”) when I stumbled upon an article about the revival of tango. It took quite “a while” until my first class.
DOES SHE GOT STYLE? – Well, call me a “creative smug masochist”. Creating some sort of concept matching place, daytime and exposure to tango music aids me and most likely makes me a little smug-ish. Also, I like to play it safe: arranging in advance, modifying on the spot to adjust to the mood makes so I’ll get a chance to survive buck fever – if you want to call it like this. And certainly one more thing: the urge of wanting to dance (myself) while dj-ing has some masochistic tendencies.
IS SHE UNIQUE? – No. I am just a picky person “putting” the music.
HOW ABOUT A COMEBACK TRACK? – Biagi, baby!
HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL
Nina Taghavi
HOW DID TANGO FIND THIS ANGEL? – Since I was a kid I was active, doing martial arts, ballet and jazz. University took all my time so I started dancing salsa. I danced socially for 3 years but always knew it wasnāt my thing. One day I watched a tango movie and decided to learn it. My first milongas were with an older crowd, but the music and the dance suited me. I remember the particular dance that touched me. I had found tango. 3 years later I went to Buenos Aires to study Spanish and also went to a milonga while I was there. That was it. I went dancing every night.
WHATāS HER SOUND? – I am loud in my music and slightly messy. I start soft and build. Every DJ has a different rhythm in tango. Some are slower, some higher. Some are into vocals, dramatic or instrumental. In my case, I like dramatic almost satiric or hyper music but equally soft. Its like chocolate, dark, velvety and melted by the end of the night. It also depends on where your playing and for who.
LOVE DJāING? – I love making people happy.
ONE LAST TANDA? – I always have something in my bag, but⦠my favourite? āEn Esta Tarde Grisā by Anibal Troilo.
LOST IN HEAVEN
Giuseppe Caputo
HOW DID TANGO FIND THIS ANGEL? – In a milonga about 8 years ago.
STYLE? – I have a classic style of DJing.
HOW DOES HE ROLL? – I think it isĀ fundamental to snatch the energy from the dance floor and to play the right orchestra at the right time. Iām also convinced that during a DJ performance what makes the difference is not the single tango or the single tanda, but the emotions that the dancers feel throughout.
MADE IN HEAVEN
Maja Petrovic
HOW DID TANGO FIND THIS ANGEL? – After classical ballet, contemporary dancing, ballroom and latin, salsa and belly dancing, it seemed like a logical choice.
WHAT SETS HER APART? – I play on the music I absolutely adore and would like to dance to myself.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT DJ’ING? – Playing all the songs I love in one night and always discovering new ones.
WHEN WE HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT AND CAN’T DANCE ANYMORE, WHAT WILL YOU PLAY? – Wait and see š
HEAVEN SENT
Samira Zakkou
HOW DID TANGO FIND YOU? – Friends travelled to Buenos Aires, discovered tango, came back and absolutely wanted to learn that thing.
WHAT’S YOUR STYLE – Iām totally in love with energetic, dramatic music from the 40s and 50s, with Troilo as my all-time favourite orchestra.
HOW IS THIS ANGEL UNIQUE? – I adore the deep sadness in tango music and I want to make you follow me into the sadness and enjoy it.
WHY DOES SHE LOVE BEING A DJ? – Connecting to the dancers and talking with them through the music.
IF THERE IS TIME FOR ONE MORE TANDA? – Troilo with Ruiz.
