I am happy to report that the unfortunate situation described in this blog has been dealt with, by finding a useful application for an old sock. The only thing that remains is the deplorable attitude that made it take 9 years to deal with it. PS. When referring to an old sock I was not referring to myself, which some of my friends suggested.
